Pilbara Region
Karratha
Go Karratha
One of the fastest growing town's in Australia, Karratha is the North West's mining hub and houses the local administrative offices for many State and Federal mining related government departments. It is also the main 'shopping centre' for the Pilbara Region, making it the next main stop if you are journeying north.
Karratha only has one backpacker hostel so make sure you check for availability before arrival. There are several caravan/camping grounds as well – along with the usual hotels/motels (which can tend to be a bit pricey).
Nearby, the Burrup Peninsula is home to some of the most prolific Aboriginal rock engraving sites known to man. Some of these are sacred sites and not available to the general public, so please contact the Karratha Visitor Centre for imformation about which sites you can, or cannot, visit.
Known as 'Munjaree' (the heart of the West Pilbara Coast) Karratha does not exude cosmopolitan charm – to say the least – but offers an authentic modern day outback town experience with access to Millstream-Chichester and Karijini National Parks, Dampier Archipelago, Point Samson Peninsula and the Burrup Peninsula. The amazing Ningaloo Reef is also just 350 kilometres to the east.
