While Perth may be the prefferred location for many people seeking employment in Western Australia, the benefits of working in remote areas include living away from home and travel allowances and high wages. Costs such as rent and meals are covered by the employer while you are onsight, so many mine workers opt for "cheap diggs" or a room in a share house based in Perth for when they are having time off work. Most mining jobs work on a "fly in fly out" (FIFO) basis where workers do shifts in remote areas for two weeks, for example, and then have one or two weeks to recreate.
